<p><font color=coral>One of the prominent early aspects of the Cuban Revolution was the literacy campaign intended to to combat the 24% illiteracy rate. Young urban students called 'brigadistas' were sent in to the country to teach reading and writing to uneducated peasants. Within 15 months illiteracy was eradicated. Many of the young brigadistas went on to become teachers and university professors.<font/>
