Favorite thing: Go with an open mind, especially if you are an American. So much of what the U.S. media presents about Cuba is colored by a political agenda and our capitalist ideology. Our society is built on individualistic, capitalistic and materialistic values. Cuban society is built on values of socialism, collectivism and the common good as well as solidarity with all people of the world. Their systems of education, health and the development of the arts, music and culture are outstanding achievements, especially sense they have been accomplished and maintained with very scarse material resources. They have achieved a degree of racial equality that Americans could never dream of. There is equally impressive progress in eliminating sexism and class inequalities. Through the eyes of many people with whom we spoke, there is great pride in their country and their (not Fidel's, but the people's) revolution, which they view as always in process. I am aware of the serious problems with human rights, the lack of individual freedoms we take fro granted as well as the continuing economic hardships, but believe that there is much to be admired and learned from this 42 year revolution.
