"DOVER CASTLE." Dover Things to Do Tip by funkymama

Dover Things to Do: 154 reviews and 222 photos

Dover Castle is without doubt one of the finest, most complete castles in the world, and is one of English Heritage's premier sites. Dover Castle is the 'Key of England' and has over 2000 years of history on one site. There is an Iron Age fort, a Roman lighthouse, a Saxon church, and a Norman keep. Deep within the White Cliffs of Dover, below the castle, is a network of secret tunnels, first built during the Napoleonic period and expanded during World War II to accomodate a hospital and operations centre. Dover Castle was used by many of history's most notable figures, including King Henry VIII and Winston Churchill. You can climb to the very top of the castle, where you are greeted by a stunning view overlooking the entire town of Dover, the busy port, and the splendid White Cliffs.
