CARNEGIE CENTRE: Hastings and Main (southwest corner). Walk there from downtown (15-20 minutes) or catch a #10 Hastings bus just about anywhere. This fabulous HISTORICAL BUILDING is the 'living room of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.' A lot of people miss this spot because they're freaked out by the poor people who hang out in the area. Yes, there are alcoholics, junkies and drug dealers around there -- I would NOT plan to be there at NIGHT -- but mostly it's just regular folks trying to get on with getting on. Carnegie Centre is a thriving community centre with the busiest community library in Canada. The library is cool because it contains a lot of locally-generated literature, research papers related to the Downtown Eastside and local historical documents, as well as the usual library stuff. There's a CHEAP CAFETERIA there, there is usually something cool to look at on the top floor (like local ART or PHOTOGRAPHY expositions, local history displays, etc.), and there are always interesting CULTURAL EVENTS and political gatherings going on there. Great place to take in a UNIQUE SLICE OF LIFE in an extremely HISTORICALLY and POLITICALLY significant part of Vancouver. Stop in for lunch: it's conveniently located BETWEEN GASTOWN AND CHINATOWN.
