Gates of Pile, Dubrovnik: 28 reviews and 41 photos
This gate has been the main entry gate to the city since the middle ages and is still in use as such. It took ist present form in 1537, the wooden door is almost 100 years older though. The beautiful gatehouse has a drawbridge and the patron siant of the city, St. Blaise (which is a 20th century work), watching over everyone who enters and leaves the city. Behind it, there is a barbican like structure which is now used for the wheelchair ramp. During the cummer season, Pile gate can be a bottleneck - so try to avoid it if possible, especially if there is a cruise ship in town.
As soon as darkness sets in, two guards in traditional uniforms can be seen standing next to the gates. Maybe their new function is to scare away unruly tourists....
Directions: Close to the old town bus station, iIn the west of the old town - indeed, it's the main entry to it.
