"THE HOSPICE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT" Heilig Geist Spital Tip by balhannah
Heilig Geist Spital, Nürnberg: 10 reviews and 18 photos
It was a lovely sunny day when I came across the Hospice of the Holy Spirt. What a picture this building was, for part of it was sitting over the calm water of the River Pegnitz, resulting in some beautiful reflections.
This old building, built between 1332 and 1339, was able to be built because of a large donation from a very wealthy person, "Konrad Gross." The Holy Spirit Hospital was the largest city institution for care of the sick and elderly in the Imperial City. During WWII, bombs hit the Hospital buildings, leaving only the ground floor walls from the bridge wing, arch structures on the Pegnitz river and the remains of the outer walls. In the 1950's, it was reconstructed, including the picturesque bay window with its pointed tower being rebuilt.
Today, the Hospice of the Holy Spirit is a municipal senior citizens' home.
