Italy Off The Beaten Path: 430 reviews and 602 photos

CINQUE TERRE - Okay, folks - it's time to get off the 'Venice-Florence-Rome' bus and get out and see the rest of this incredible country!! :) The Cinque Terre, while not completely off the tourist radar screen, is well worth the side-trip. It's a grouping of five fishing villages perched along the Ligurian coastline's cliffs. There's a hiking trail between them (although one leg was closed for repair when we were there), and beaches galore, but they're ideal for just relaxing in the lovely Italian sun. We stayed in Riomaggiore, the southern-most of the five villages, and hiked between three others. They're incredibly picturesque, and quite peaceful - the most common nationality of tourists is German, followed closely by American backpackers (as it's pretty inexpensive to stay and to eat well), but as each town is very small, the tourist population doesn't become overwhelming. Highly recommended!! (This picture is of Manarola, the second village from the south.)
