"BASSANO DEL GRAPPA - This..." Italy Off The Beaten Path Tip by JessicaS

BASSANO DEL GRAPPA - This charming little town at the base of the Dolomites is about an hour outside Venezia. It's definitely not a tourist destination - we have some friends living there, which is why we went - but it's still adorable. There's a river running through the center of the old town (can't recall the name) with a lovely pedestrian-only bridge crossing it. The bridge has been washed out many times over the centuries, so I don't know if the one that's there now was BUILT by Palladio, or only DESIGNED by him and rebuilt after a flood. Either way, it's a very pretty bridge. There are plenty of quaint little shops in the town, and a weekend market in the square. You can also sample some of the local fire-water, Grappa, at any one of a number of distilleries in the area. Just be sure you have the stomach for it first. (This picture is the pedestrian bridge.)
