"Zagreb, capitol of Croatia" Croatia Things to Do Tip by tomeek

Croatia Things to Do: 546 reviews and 971 photos

Zagreb, the capitol of Croatia. On this pic you see its cental place, the Ban Jelacic square. If you come to Croatia by plane, take a day of two to explore our city. You will surely find its old architecture interesting. The old part of the city is above on the hills, dated many centuries ago, originally built as a fortress to protect its people against many invadors, Turks in particular. Later on the city grew outside the thick walls and down the hills and todays shape is primarely given by Austro-Hungarian architects who built it by their own standards. Most of the building in city's centre are well kept and preserved so take your time and walk through its streets, find some small caffee and enjoy the view drinking your favorite coffee! There are modern areas as well as city grew rapidly in the last 50 years. Modern alleys and buildings are situated more South, accross the Sava river which somewhow devides old from new part of Zagreb. Please visit my separate Zagreb travelogue for more details!
