friendship cemetery was established in 1849. after the battle of shiloh thousands of confederate dead were buried here. in 1866 a group of ladies met at the twelve gables house to plan to decorate the graves of fallen civil war soldiers. this meeting led to the national holiday of memorial day. as well as the huge confederate section friendship cemetery has an interesting collection of funerary art. friendship cemetery is listed on the national register of historic places.

Address: 4 th street.
