The Cathedral of Valencia was built between the 13th and the 15th century over the site of a former Visigothic cathedral, which had been turned into a mosque during the Islamic domination. Gothic is the predominant style, although Romanesque, Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-Classical elements are also present.
The Cathedral is basically a Gothic building, a cruciform plan with transepts north and south, and a crossing covered by an octagonal tower, with an ambulatory and a polygonal apse. The Miguelete or Micalet, the belfry of the Cathedral, finished in 1425, was initially separate from the body of the church, until the nave was expanded.

A chalice from the 1st century, given to the cathedral by king Alfonso V of Aragon in 1436, is said to be the one of the Holy Chalices and has been defended as the true Holy Grail.
Pope Innocent VIII elevated the Valencian See to the rank of metropolitan see, upon the request of the Valencian Pope Alexander VI, when still a cardinal.
