Ripon has grown up around its market place and square, which has provided a focus for the life of the city.It is not unlikely that a market had developed at Ripon by the 10th century when Yorkshire was renowed for the number of its markets and fairs. There has thus probably been a market here for over a thousand years.Thursdays would draw out extra pilgrims for whom traders would set out their stalls, the inspiration for Thursday as Ripon's market day can be claimed to go back to the eighth century. In the 18th century'Daniel Dafoe' described Ripon Market Square as' the finest and most beautiful square that is to be seen of its kind in England'.In the centre of the square is the Obelisk(designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor) erected in honour of the' Ripon Cornblower's' whose job in the middle ages was similar to that of a mayor, although he had more responsibilities in the keeping of law and order.Every day at 9pm the horn is blown from the four corners of Obelisk. The horn has become the symbol of the city and is shown on the coat of arms.Other famous buildings in square include the Town Hall and the Unicorn Hotel.
