"Beinhaus - The Ossuary" Naters Things to Do Tip by Kathrin_E
Naters Things to Do: 18 reviews and 45 photos
The ossuary by the church is the most remarkable sight of Naters. It was built in 1514 to serve as a burial place for the bones from older graves which were opened and abandoned because the little churchyard was too small.
Upstairs there is a chapel dedicated to St Anna (which was closed). A large opening under the double stairs allows a look into the lower chapel. It reveals a crucifix with Mary and John the Evangelist in front of what seems to be an ornated wall. The ornaments, however, are skulls and bones, carefully piled to form a pattern.
The inscription on the beam above the cross says: "We were what you are now - you will become what we are."
