The Church of St. Maurice is probably most famous for the grand organ it has, the largest in Central Europe.

The 15th century Gothic church of St Maurice was named after the leader of the legendary Roman Theban legion in the 3rd Century. St. Maurice apparently achieved notoriety when the legionnaires were ordered to harass local Christians and refused, whereupon they were massacred by the old practice of decimation (every tenth soldier).

The main chapel is from 1854. The church was damaged by fires several times, the most significant being in 1709

You may visit the Church anytime when Mass is not in session. It is still an active parish church. One of the parishioners keeps watch but speaks very little English. Photography is allowed.

I came to Olomouc at the end of an international organ festival. On the second day of my visit I returned to the church to see if I could get some better pictures and behold,,,,the organist was practicing, it was sublime!!
