"Roland" Bremen Things to Do Tip by Maryimelda

There are several statues of the famous Roland scattered around different German cities but the one in Bremen is sensational to say the least. Roland was initially placed in these places as a protest against the Holy Roman Empire which was in control of so many cities. He was there to protect the city from religious assault.

This one was built in 1404 and it is widely believed that if the statue ever gets damaged or destroyed then Bremen will be vulnerable to attack. For this reason it is said that a second Roland statue lies in storage under the Rathaus so that it can be slipped in to replace Roland should the worst ever happen.

The construction from ground to top is about 10+ meters high and the figure of Roland is more than 5 meters. It is a really imposing sight made even better by the fact that he is such a handsome devil.
