"Language Decode: "There You Go!"" Australia Local Custom Tip by pedroswift

Visitors to Australia whose primary language is not English will be confronted with lots of funny sounding idiomatic expressions.
In the interest of "keeping it simple" - may I supply a decode for one very much over-used sentence - namely : "There you go". Probably imported from USA, it is frequently used here in Oz. "Oz" = Australia

The words are run together and Pronounced: "there-yuh go"

Please be advised that it has nothing to do with YOU "going" anywhere.

Typically it is used by persons selling or giving something to you.
You pay for the ice-cream at the counter in France and, as it is handed to you, the man says "bon appetit"! In Italy he says "buon appetito"! In Australia he says, "There you go"!! A funny way of saying, "Here is what you want" ...or ..."This 'thing'... I am giving to you!"

An real-life example of confusion caused by the phrase.
At a restaurant on Kangaroo Island (South Australia)....The island attracts quite a few European Honeymooners. We are waiting for our meals to be served. The young couple next to us are conversing in German so we strike up a friendly conversation ....ask if they are enjoying their holiday etc.
The waitress arrives with their meals; places them on the table and says "There you go!"
The young man's immediate reaction is to look around the room with a lost look and ask in English, "We have to GO somewhere else to eat this meal????"
