For years now the press has documented the horrific homicides that take place daily in Ciuduad Jaurez, immediately across the border from El Paso.

Still as we walked on the edge of the Golden Horeshoe District in El Paso we could see scores of cars and trucks with United States license plates heading into the City. Just two weeks prior the head of one of two major drug cartels indicated that they would kill a police officer every day that the existing Juarez police commissioner remains on the job.

Threats and violence are nothing new to Ciudad Juarez where thousands of homicides have been carried out in the past few years. Most commentators rank the City as the or the second most violent City in the world.

From towers and observation points in the City one can see over the border to adjacent streets in Ciudad Juarez. I could see a building which looked like a hotel completely baracaded with sand bags with officers in full military uniform behind them. Scenes from a war zone, apparently.

When we talked to people at El Paso restaurant about Ciudad Juarez the comments were strikingly similar. "Horrible, outrageous and don't go there."

Hopefully the situation in Ciudad Juarez will improve both for the people who live there and the tourists that use to frequent the City. For the meantime, people like myself will only look across the border and pray that the situation improves.
