The open-air museum in Detmold is really an impressive one, with many old houses that you can visit. In one building you even were allowed to touch everything and you could test how to lie in an old bed. The open-air museum is very large, the grounds are 90ha with over 100 buildings, so you should plan to spend quite some time there! I’m sure we’ve missed some houses, but I couldn’t walk anymore! After you’ve visited some of the farm buildings, you’ll find what that these Westfalian houses always follow the same scheme: they have a large door (very typical for these houses), when you get in you find the boxes for the animals to your left and right, if you continue you walk towards a fireplace and behind in the back of the building are the living quarters. Even small houses were built like this. When you walk through the towns in that region you’ll find such houses everywhere, not only in small villages, as everyone used to do some kind of farming. I found it really interesting, in the region where I live the half-timbered houses look different!
Besides farm buildings, there’s a pottery, a school, an old shop, nice kitchen gardens, a watermill and also two windmills that you can go inside and have a look at how they are working. The windmills may not always be open. Then there’s a bakery where you can buy fresh baked cakes and other things (unfortunately it was closed around noon). There are some places where you can have lunch, we went to the restaurant “Im Weißen Roß”. Of course it’s in an old building as well, very cosy, and you can get typical food of Westfalia here.
