This is a wonderful historic hotel near Westminster; it is actually located in Taneytown, which is the next town west of Westminster. Built in 1844, the hotel has been restored and is one of those special places that you go to on special occasions. For us, our children gave us a night here “just because” – it was only about 15 minutes from our house, but I’d admired it for a sometime. A few years later our daughter and her husband spent the first two nights of their honeymoon here.

The décor of the hotel is beautiful; the rooms exquisite. This is not your typical hotel – there is no television in the room and the ‘do not disturb’ sign is actually a stuffed cat that you put outside your door. In the morning, breakfast is served at your room – the hotel places the tray on a wooden waiter that sits outside your door. When you open your door, the little waiter is standing there holding the tray up for you!

In the evenings, you can join in the fun downstairs where they have a reception and piano playing. There is a wonderful restaurant attached to the hotel as well.

During the day, spend some time wandering the 25 acres of grounds – the gardens in full bloom are magnificent and it is easy to see why this is a popular spot for outdoor weddings.

We’ve also helped with a charity event at the Antrim 1844 each spring – “Taste of Carroll” – where restaurants from all around Carroll Country come to help raise funds for the Carroll Hospice.

The Antrim 1844 is not cheap – in fact, it is pretty expensive. But if you want a special evening, this is the place to go!
