Mechanics & Merchants Bank, now the Bankuet Place
by b1bob

Favorite thing: I'm just old enough to remember this classic revival building at 1129 Hull Street (at the corner of Hull and 12th Street on the south side) while it still served as a bank. My family and I would pass it on Hull Street on the way from Mechanicsville to Grandma's house in Halifax County. It opened round about 1915. By the mid 1970s, the bank closed down and remained abandoned until very recently. In 2005 or 2006, the building was cleverly repurposed into a place to hold events. It's called The Bankuet Place to pay homage to its original purpose. Really, an old bank building so ornately designed is a great place to hold formal events like banquets, retirement parties, weddings, etc.
