"With its 16,5 km, POSTOJNA..." Slovenia Things to Do Tip by oja

Slovenia Things to Do: 544 reviews and 992 photos

<font color=teal><B><I>With its 16,5 km, POSTOJNA CAVE is the longest cave in Slovenia and sixteenth longest in the world. Discovered in 1818 and electrified in 1884 (with the railway line added soon after), it is an underworld by itself with halls, waters and limestone formations. With about a million visitors a year it is the most popular Slovenian cave by far. Every year before Christmas, a living crib performance is set there.
Less popular but equally magnificent are SKOCJAN CAVES (photo: Web Page), a complex of huge underground halls, narrow and cramped passages, bottomless abysses, and of course numerous limestone formations. Situated near Divaca (80 km South-West from Ljubljana) and UNESCO protected, the caves are worth a visit also for wonderful, rather untouched nature around and above them. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg as far as Slovenian underworld is concerned. The Karst region hides literally hundreds of caves and pits, with new ones being discovered every year. So watch your step around there, you may incidentally 'discover' one yourself!
