the following "things to do" tips is a virtual tour of the battlefield following the park auto tour. the first stop is dunker church near the visitor center. mr. samuel mumma, the owner of mumma farm donated land in 1851 for the dunkers to build their church. dunkers are german baptists that called themselves neue taufer. americans refered to them as dunkers because of their total immersion baptisms. this simple church was built in 1852. on september 16 th 1862 confederate infantry and artillery was positioned around dunker church in anticipation of the battle that was fought the next day. during the battle the church was the focal point of union attacks on the confederate left flank. after the battle the church was used as a confederate hospital. the church was heavily damaged by artillery and rifle fire during the battle and was repaired in 1864. the dunker church held regular services until the turn of the 20 th century. the dunker church was destroyed by a wind storm in 1921 and was reconstructed in 1962. dunker church is stop number 1 on the battlefield auto tour.
