Sitting atop the Third Hill of old Constantinople ? there were seven hills for New Rome just as there were for Old Rome ? between the Süleymaniye and Beyazıt Mosques are the grounds of Turkey?s largest public university ? Istanbul University. Some 60,000 students study here at a school which dates to the time of the Ottoman conquest. Rising above the ground is the Beyazıt Kulesi ? the Fire Tower. Built in 1828, the tower rises some 85 m/274 feet and was erected as a lookout for fires in the city. Entry into the university grounds require a university ID which my gracious guide just happened to have.
