Located in Rosslyn, and in a very predominant position is the Iwo Jima Memorial . This memorial is dedicated to the brave men of the United States Marine Corps in the Second World War that battled there way up to the very heights of Mount Surubachi to plant the "stars and stripes" denoting for all on the heavily defended Japanese Island to see that the Island was "taken" (secure). Well, it was far from secure at the time as there was still more bitter fighting to come. The labourious job of dislodging the Japanese defenders from there strategic strongholds in caves was avery costly exercise for the Marines. The temporary flagpole was found to be not high enough and was then replaced with someting more substantial in height for all on the Island to see.,the Island was finally secured and at a huge cost to these many gallant soldiers of the US Marine Corps that gave it all on this not so pleasant island.

Address: Iwo Jima Memorial located in Rosslyn Virginia..
