Goreme Things to Do: 251 reviews and 622 photos

A UNESCO World Heritage Site... but beware the tours!!! If you are on a tour you will have a timed and speedy trip inside the churches - a strict time schedule is imposed and there is no escape from it. If you are not on a tour - you will just have to try to jump in in between tours!!!

The Cappadocia region was formed after a huge volcanic erruption. Ash and lava formed strange rocks. Eventually people started to realise that these massive rocks were actually soft and that it was possible to carve them out and there are many churches all acorss Goreme. This open air museum is, however, a huge monastic site.

I wish I was more properly informed about all of this but my guide spoke fast and was almost impossible to understand. The apses were very important as was the Apple church - that is about all I got! The frescoes are incredible... but the best of all has to be the Dark Church. It costs extrea to visit the Dark Church (but not much) The paintings have been touched up but are still impressive. No photography is allowed inside the Dark Church.
