I still remember well my first visit ever to Verona, it was back in 1970 at the time when Piazza delle Erbe was city market place for "frutta e verdura" (fruits and vegetables). Gosh, it was 40 years ago, I myself deserve to be treated as an historic sight.
Eversince the Roman times this sight was the real heart of Verona, meeting place and home to the market. There were some attempts from the city authorities, few years ago, to remove stands from Piazza delle Erbe, permanently, but it didn't pass. Veronese people love this sight and want it to be what it always used to be, the city market.

What to buy: Either fresh fruits or vegetables, or perhaps good guide book of the city and its surroundings, inexpensive souvenirs, or maybe jersey from favourite football club. For somebody it could be just interesting to stroll in between the stands and see what is offering there. Could be also amusing to sit at the cafe-bar, opposite to the market, and observe process of buying and selling, why not.
