The Père-Lachaise is Paris largest graveyard is one of four cemeteries that replaced the old inner city field. It opened in 1804.

The name Père-LaChaise came from Père François de la Chaise, the confessor to Louis XIV, who lived in the Jesuit house on the hill. that later became the cemetery.
