"Sandgerši - Memorial for fishermen." Sandgerši Things to Do Tip by Regina1965

Sandgerši Things to Do: 3 reviews and 14 photos

In every hamlet in Iceland there is a memorial for fishermen, seeing that Iceland“s main industry through the ages has been fishery, although it has changed now. And Iceland has lost many a man to the harsh ocean.

Of course all of these memorials are beautiful and sad at the same time, there is not a single one I have seen which doesn“t give me a lump in my throat. Especially the one in Grindavķk. But the one in Sandgerši is so symbolic, showing man against nature - the waves of the ocean.

The memorial is made by Steinunn Žórarinsdóttir and is called Enchantment (Įlög) and the waves are made of stainless steel, but the figure of the man is made of steel which can rust, showing the imperishability of the ocean vs that all men perish.

Directions: By the road as you enter Sandgerši town.
