If you're in the area and like The Rock, you may also wish to consider this.
Just 16 km north of Lockhart,Galore Hill Scenic Reserve is a Recreation Reserve comprising 510ha of natural bushland and provides a habitat for a wide variety of native flora and fauna.
Galore Hill rises to a height of 215 metres above the surrounding plains.
The Reserve has grey kangaroos, echidnas and various lizzards. Over 140 different species of birds have been identified and 850 different varieties of Australian native plants grow naturally or have been established in plantations on the flats and lower slopes. Particularly from August to October, the entire area abounds with flowering native plants, including 17 varieties of ground orchids, annual and perennial wildflowers, shrubs and trees.
There are B.B.Q. and picnic facilities and toilets at both the Summit and the Saddle but no camping area. The caves on the northern face were reputedly a hideout for the notorious bushranger Dan Morgan.
The lookout tower at the Summit gives great views in all directions. Access is via Slocums Lane off the Narrandera Road.
