William B. Umstead State Park is an urban oasis, a state park nestled in between the bustling cities of Raleigh, Cary, Durham, and RDU airport. Despite being located right in the middle of a crowded urban area, it's an oasis of natural tranquility and a great way to get away from the hustle of the city. There are two entrances to the park: the Crabtree Creek entrance off US-70 in Raleigh, just east of I-540, and the Reedy Creek entrance off I-40 at exit 287 in Cary. The park offers picnic tables and shelters, more than 20 miles of hiking trails, and another 15 miles of multi-use gravel trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. In the warmer months (usually April to October), the boat house is open and offers canoes and rowboats for rental on Big Lake. So no matter what you're looking for, Umstead offers a great opportunity to escape the city and relax amidst nature. Check out my William B. Umstead State Park page for more information.
