Skofja Loka Things to Do: 150 reviews and 297 photos
I don't think you could miss seeing this Castle that overlooks Skofja Loka.
Another one, that means an uphill climb, don't worry though, as the walk, even though uphill wasn't that bad as there weren't any step's, just a good, pathed pathway.
The problem is, after walking to the top, I found the notice with the opening hours, and the Castle was closed! Well, I walked around as much as I could, then headed back to the Town.
From the year 973 until 1803, the owners of the castle were the Bishops of Freising. They experienced and earthquake in 1511 here, which meant a lot of the Castle had to be renovated and some new buildings were added, like the Tower with Chapel that was built in 1527.
Then there was remodelling, with the construction of new surrounding residence areas in three levels in the 18th century. From here on, there were many different owner's, and unfortunately, some of history was destroyed.
The Castle walls, Residential wings, the Four defence Towers are still there.
Since 1959 the castle has been a local museum showing collection's of items from Skofja Loka and surroundings, archaeological collection, art collection, recent history and more, the website has more details.
