Foch was a French general in the first World War. He was chosen supreme commander of the Allied armies, a position he held until 11 November 1918, the German request for an armistice was accepted. He came up with peace terms that would make Germany unable to pose a threat to France ever again. His words after the Treaty of Versailles: "This is not a peace. It is an armistice for twenty years".

Foch was made a British Field Marshal in 1919.
In 1923 he became Marshal of Poland.
