Adjoining the iconic Kappelbreucke is the octagonal shaped Wasserturm. This water tower, built in brick, is a feature that makes the bridge truly recognizable and different in appearance from Speuerbruecke, which can be found a little further along the River Reuss. It has a long and colourful history dating back to the 1300s and has seen service not only as part of the fortifications of Lucerne, but also as a prison a torture chamber and a guild hall. Today it is the home of some very interesting 17th century paintings.
