"The Legend of Knight Georg and the Dragon" Schwarzenberg Local Custom Tip by Kathrin_E

Schwarzenberg Local Customs: 8 reviews and 32 photos

Once upon a time a terrible dragon lived on the rock above the Schwarzwasser valley, opposite the town. The brave Knight Georg ventured out on his horse to challenge and kill the dragon. He succeeded, but the price was his own life. Georg fell off the rock and died in the river. The rock received the name "Totenstein".

The heroic knight, who somehow got intermingled with Saint George, is still commemorated: He is depicted in the crest of the town.
A wall in the playground next to the Glockenspiel has a row of paintings that present the legends and history of the town. The playground has a big wooden dragon for kids to climb on. Georg and the dragon appear in the old town festival eevry year.
