"Train Trips through the Countryside" Battle Ground Things to Do Tip by glabah
Battle Ground Things to Do: 3 reviews and 7 photos
There has been a small tourist railroad in Battle Ground since the early 1980s. Originally these were operated by the Chelatchie Priarie Railroad, but then this company ceased operations in the mid-1980s. Later, the line operated as the Lewis & Clark Railway, but now the Chelatchie Priarie Railroad name is back. This time it is owned by a non-profit organization. The official name of the organization is Battle Ground, Yacolt & Chelatchie Prairie Railroad, but this allows them to keep the old Chelatchie Prairie Railroad name active.
At one time trains did operate from Battle Ground, but today they originate in Yacolt. The train goes t a small county park that features a water fall and is a popular summer time destination.
The trip is a 5 mile one way trip, with a layover typically done at Moulton Falls Park, and then the return trip to Yacolt.
The area along the line used to be reasonably scenic, and when I rode these excursions as a child it was reasonably entertaining. Today, it doesn't seem to be quite as scenic with all the suburban sprawl that has happened along the line. However, there are still many scenic places, and the falls are a nice place to visit.
They have some hope of getting a steam locomotive operating on their line at some point.
The typical season is May through December.
