"The Castle" Schwarzenberg Things to Do Tip by Kathrin_E
Schwarzenberg Things to Do: 13 reviews and 51 photos
The oldest part of the castle is the keep which dates back to the 12th century. The medieval castle was the seat of a local noble family. In the 16th century the Electors of Saxony bought the castle and the territory from them. The castle was refurbished and turned into a hunting palace in the 1550s. In 1875 an additional wing was built for offices of the administration and the law court.
Due to its location on a promontory rock, there was little space to extend the castle. The three wings surround a narrow rectangular courtyard. The courtyard can be entered for free through the main gate.
Left of the gate, a stairway leads down to a path that surrounds the castle on the outside. The steepness of rock and buildings are most impressive from there.
The castle contains a museum about the history of town and castle, mining, metal crafts and lace-making. The tower can be climbed during the opening hours of the museum. Unfortunately I did not have enough time to visit the museum.
Directions: Unnecessary. The castle is impossible to miss.
