Schwarzenberg has its botanical speciality: the so-called Schwarzenberger Edelweiß. This white flower is in fact no Edelweiß but a Tanacetum species, a wildflower that originates on the Iberian peninsula. In the 19th century seeds were brought to Schwarzenberg among imported bark of cork oak. The plant happily settled in the new surroundings, you'll find these flowers all over the town in summer.

The flower has become a local symbol. The legendary female companion of the ditto legendary Knight Georg has been named Maid Edelweiß, and the annual summer festival which takes place on the 3rd weekend in August is called Altstadt- und Edelweißfest.
