Eschenheimer Turm - Eschenheim Tower, Frankfurt am Main: 11 reviews and 17 photos
Eschenheimer Turm is all that remains of Frankfurt's once prodigious medieval defenses. You can get a feel for just how impressive these fortifications were, and just how important a city imperial Frankfurt once was. Along with the 60 other towers that encircled the city, Eschenheimer Turm was due to be torn down in the 19th century by the then Prussian government. A last minute reprieve came from a request to save this, the most important of the city's towers, as a monument for future generations. How much different Frankfurt might have looked if they had had the foresight to keep all the fortifications. It must have been a sight to behold.
Today Eschenheimer Turm sits on a large traffic junction, above a busy tube station, at the northern end of the inner city.
Directions: U-Bahn to Eschenheimer Turm.
