We weren't actually looking for this funicular, but another which we couldn't find! They are difficult, as the entrance is small and behind a glass door. Above the door is a big sign.
Deciding on this one, 1st we had to buy the ticket from the machine. We had difficulty, but a nice lady who could speak English helped us.
This funicular, built in 1901, is the longest in Genoa. It links the city centre, with stops along the way and at the top of Righi Hill. Don't expect a lot of views on the way up or down, as half of the line is in a tunnel!
There are 5 stops along the way...........Carbonara (the stop is under the tunnel), San Nicolo (just at the end of the tunnel), Madonnetta, Via Preve and San Simone.
Each cabin can transport 156 passengers, went we went, there were about 4!
So, we are at the top and wondering which way to go, so we chose uphill, trudging up the hill in the heat, until we came to a viewpoint. What a wonderful view over Genoa and the Harbour, it was fabulous! We could see all the Ship's in Port, the historic Lanterna, and then all the city, the Old port area, it was well worth making the trip.
We saw a park and some picnic tables, a Grave Headstone, and then we went back to the funicular and down the steep hill to the historic centre.
COST IN 2011......Adults 1.5 euro
Address: Righi - centre north
