From today's perspective it is difficult to imagine that once households in the cities had no running water. As a child I was in a mountain village in Bosnia where there was no water supply and the water and the household supplied water from several wells, and this was everyday and very laborious task for family members.
Water supply in the former Venice depended on the public wells that existed in each square or open space in the city. Of course that every wealthy house had its own well, only for their own use. Public wells were built by churches, city government and private donors. Wells are spread all over the city and can be noticed that that a good part, of those which survived, are identical or very similar, as if they were built in the one workshop. Those are wells built by the city authorities. Construction of wells that differ from the usual pattern was financed by donors.
