This colourful fountain is less than 100 years old and depicts the legendary Brother Fritschi who is allegedly buried under the fountain. The story dates back to the 15th century and tells of a farmer with a sense of humour who entertained the people with his humour whenever he came to town.
He was chairman of the Safran Guild in Lucerne and left money to the Guild when he died on the provision that they provided the poor with wine during Fasnacht which was a celebration which is held from the Thursday before Ash Wednesday until Shrove Tuesday (Fat Tuesday). The main part of the parade on Fasnacht Thursday is held in Kapellplatz where the Fritschi Fountain is located.
