One of my favorite stops in Hamilton was the Hog Penny Pub. Established in 1957, it claims to be the "oldest licensed establishment in Hamilton," and "the original inspiration for the "Cheers Pub" in Boston."

The minute we stepped into the Hog Penny
, the pub immediately appealed to me because of its resemblance to the cozy pubs of Britain. The little pub was packed with the day's local lunch crowd as well as tourists but we managed to find two seats at the bar. This turned out to be good luck for two reasons: it gave us a good prospective from which to survey & admire the rest of the pub, and we got to have a little conversation with the hardworking and amiable bartender, Damien. Over a delicious plate of naan bread and 3 dips ($7.95), and a Carlsberg draft ($6.50) with a taste of Kilkenney Cream Ale on the side, Damien kindly answered a few questions about the Hog Penny and his island of Bermuda. I couldn't help but think Damien probably gets very tired of all the tourists, but as the economy of Bermuda is also feeling the economic pinch of the global financial crisis, he must be happy that the tourist crowd patronizes the Hog Penny in a big way.

A full menu, including traditional pub food and even Indian Curries, is available at the Hog Penny
and we can attest to the fact that our appetizer was very tasty. I am guessing that since the Hog Penny was very busy when we visited around lunch time, the other items on the menu are just as good. For beer lovers, they have Carlsberg, Bass Ale, Fosters and Samuel Adams, as well as the Kilkenney Cream Ale by Guinness, on draft as well as many other bottle brews to choose from.

Live entertainment is offered nightly and I'm sure it would be a great accompaniment to the food and cozy surroundings of the Hog Penny
-- 9:30 pm to 1 am. Unfortunately, we were not able to be at the Hog Penny in the evening to enjoy the show.

I never found out how the Pub came to have its name, but Bermuda does have a penny with the iconic Bermuda hog on it.

Note: all prices listed are 2011. The Barracuda Grill is just above the Hog Penny Pub
-- a very upscale dining establishment.
