Many of the buildings in the central shopping area have a heritage listing which means they are classified by the National Trust and you have to have special approval to make any alterations or restorations.
Just across the railway line from the Culcairn Hotel (heading north) is the Station Master's Residence (circa 1883), a handsome building which is currently being redeveloped by the Culcairn Museum Committee. It's furnished in traditional style dating to around1880-1890. There's an old railway carriage in the garden out the back of the residence. At the moment it is only open on Saturdays. Ask in the town if you want it opened earlier.
