Favorite thing: It is believed that here is the Harald's Hårfagre (Fair Hair) grave and it is one of the most important monuments on Norwegian's history.
Harald Hårfagre (IX-X century) was considered the first king of Norway as, after the fight in Hafrsfjorden (I have some tips about this place too) he have unified all (!) the 29th kingdoms (represented by 29 small obelisques at the monument in Haugesund.
Reading the name of the old kingdoms, I have recognized few of the names of the actual "fylker?). I am wondering what kind of "kingdoms" they have had in that time, as the entire population was probably few tens of thousands inhabitants in all the new Kingdom.
What is really interesting from my point of view is that the name of the country "Norway" seems to come from the name of that narrow passage, east of Avaldsnes, used in that time as a safest way for sailing to the North - "Nordvegen" (it sounds in Norwegian as "Nor?veien").
Behind Harald Hårfagre you may find some nice stories, one of them stating as the main reason for unifying all the country? a love story.
Fondest memory: It is always raining :)
It is anyway amazing that you'll find beaches and mountains peaks over 700 meters, almost in the same place.
The view from the top of the mountains here is breathtaking... if you'll be here in that days when the rains stops :)
