  Frog Black-spot!
by balhannah

Not long into Slovenia we came across a road sign with a Frog and exclamation mark! In all the countries we have visited, we had never come across this!

So, at the next information centre, we asked about this, and were told, they did not want their Frog's squashed by vehicle traffic.
Doing a little more digging around, I found that at the beginning of Spring, Frogs, Toads and Newts begin their annual migration from hibernating places to breeding sites, and are quite often killed crossing the roads.
These migratory tracks, are called "black spots" for Frogs and Amphibian's.

All across Slovenia, volunteers are putting up protective fences and carrying amphibians across the road, putting buckets against fences so the Frog's fall into them.
?Last year we managed to carry approximately 22,500 amphibians across the road in ten days."

So, watch out for these important little fella's in Spring time, when their hibernation begins.

How lovely that people try so hard to help the frogs!

Great that you noticed those spots, unfortunatelly those signs are not everywhere where frogs are. In my village we do saving frogs too, but still they're many dead each year. It's awful but we try...
