A day trip to Karlovy Vary from the German side of the Ore Mountains, in this case the Zschopau valley area, by public transport is doable but requires a bit of planning. Train connections are complicated and time-consuming. The easiest option is the Autobus Sachsen bus line 1000. However, this bus runs only once per week, on Tuesday, and only from May to September. If this fits your travel dates, it is easy and convenient.

The bus starts in Zschopau very early in the morning, then runs via Chemnitz, Annaberg-Buchholz and Oberwiesenthal with a couple of stops in between to Karlovy Vary and, if there are passengers, on to Mariánské Láznĕ.

In Karlovy Vary the bus drops you off at the bus station of Dolní Nádraží, the "lower" train station, in walking distance from the centre and the beginning of the spa quarter. It arrives at 9.40 and departs for the return at 16.30 - enough time to do and see quite a lot in town. The return fare from Annaberg was 13 €.

Reservations for this bus can be made on this website - in theory, we had to find out that this did not work too well. Boarding the bus in Annaberg and buying the ticket from the driver turned out to be no problem, though.
