Salzburg is a nice town at the Salzach river, with a lovely old town. The old town is not that large, but you can spend quite some time strolling around, looking at all the shops and trying to find all the various areaways. Some are pretty unspectacular, but there are interesting ones with nice inner courts!

Above the old town sits the fortress, Festung Hohensalzburg. You can take a tour with an audio-guide through a part of the fortress, but better come early as there are quickly queues. The tour also will get you on the tower where you can enjoy the view on the town. The fortress is on the Mönchsberg moutaing and there?s a nice path on it from where you have great views on the town. You also can walk up the Kapuzinerberg mountain on the opposite side of the Salzach river, this gives you another great view on the old town.

Salzburg also has many churches and you will need more than one day to visit all! We visited only some, like the bright cathedral, the old Franciscan church and the pompous Abbey Church St Peter.
Salzburg is the town where the composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born, and you can visit his birthplace which is a museum now. But there are also other famous people who were born in Salzburg like the physicist Chrisian Doppler (you may know Doppler?s principle) or the poet Joseph Moor who has written the text of the carol ?Stille Nacht" ("Silent Night?).

Salzburg is a very touristy place and there were many people, but we always found a place at the Salzach river where we could sit and enjoy the nice weather and the view on the town and the fortress. We spent quite a lot of time at the Salzbach river at various places as it was so great there! There?s another nice spot where you can relax which is the Mirabell gardens. This is a lovely baroque garden in front of the Mirabell palace.
