Seeing that Reykjanes is a volcanic, geothermal area there is a power plant there as well, Reykjanesvirkjun, which you will drive by when visiting Gunnuhver and Reykjanesviti.

Reykjanesvirkjun is a geothermal power plant of 100 MW. 12 boreholes, with depth from 1.800-2.600 m, which provide water with temperature of 285-315 degrees C. The plant uses 4.000 liters of seawater for cooling. It opened in 2006.

Almost all of the production is sold to the aluminium factory, Norurßl in Hvalfj÷rur bay.

Directions: Coming from ReykjavÝk on road 41 take a left turn on road 43 leading to The Blue Lagoon and GrindavÝk. From GrindavÝk take road 425 which takes you along the shore towards the geothermal area.
