"Earthquakes" Provincia de San Juan Warnings Or Dangers Tip by GentleSpirit

San Juan Province is located in an active seismic zone. You may experience a tremor or even a mild earthquake. Follow any safety instructions from your tour or hotel carefully.

There is a long history of strong earthquakes.
1944 earthquake (7.3) destroyed most of San Juan city, causing about 10,000 deaths and leaving up to a third of the province homeless. That damage was so extensive should not be terribly surprising as building codes were weak and so many structures were made of adobe. Stronger building codes have been enacted and greater care in urban planning. San Juan city is entirely rebuilt.

1977 Earthquake- this earthquake measured about 7.4 on the richter scale. When you are leaving San Juan city you will pass through the village of Caucete, where you will see the crater left by this earthquake.
