"Frauenkirche" Frauenkirche - Church of Our Lady Tip by mauro_pd

 Restoration status in August 2002
by mauro_pd

Visit The Frauenkirche church, the largest Protestant domed building in history. It is to be rebuilt with money contributed from all over the world.
The whole area around the Frauenkirche, which is currently empty, will be restored as a piece of old Dresden. Next to historic Baroque buildings, new buildings with old dimensions will be built. In the heart of Dresden, the Royal Palace is being reconstructed. Directly opposite the palace is the Taschenbergpalais, which was rebuilt after being reduced to just its outer walls in the war.

Frauenkirche was destroyed in 1945 after a massive firestorm bombing night during WW2.
You have to go there to understand; there is a plan to rebuild the church after the war and u can see all the saved original pieces spread around in open-air 'warehouses' around the square.
It's amazing the fact that u can see at which point of the project they are and how long is still the way to go for (end planned for 2006).
Religious services are active in already rebuilt area.
For december 2003 update please check General Tips section.
